Program overview

The Fellowship in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound at MGA Medical Global Academy is a course aimed at enhancing skills in musculoskeletal imaging and ultrasound guided procedures, with a particular emphasis on practice. This structured 12-month program consists of theoretical studies, clinical training, live case demonstrations, and mentored instruction to develop skills in the assessment of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves and soft tissue pathologies. The fellowship areas of concentration are diagnostic accuracy, dynamic imaging modalities, interventional procedures, sports injury assessment, rheumatologic applications, pain management, and advanced ultrasound technologies, allowing the fellowship to provide the fellow with the ability to provide precise care supported by evidence.

Skills You Will Gain

  • Understanding physics, instrumentation, probe selection, machine optimisation and musculoskeletal sonoanatomy.

  • Specialty knowledge of upper and lower limb ultrasound assessment and imaging of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot.

  • Knowledge of peripheral nerve sonography and diagnosis of entrapment neuropathies (carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome).

  • Training on ultrasound-guided interventions such as joint injections, aspirations, hydrodissection and corticosteroid injections.

  • Understanding of the assessment of sports injury such as tendon tear, ligament injury, muscle haematoma, avulsion injury and dynamic instability evaluation.

  • Rheumatologic ultrasound skills in synovitis, Power Doppler and early detection of erosions in inflammatory arthritis.

  • Knowledge of paediatric musculoskeletal ultrasound, hip dysplasia, transient synovitis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

  • Advanced applications like elastography, dynamic ultrasound, weight-bearing imaging, AI-assisted ultrasound interpretation and tele-ultrasound practices.

  • Correlating ultrasound findings with MRI, CT and X-ray images for a full diagnostic interpretation.

  • Clinical decision making skills, interpretation and reporting of images, teaching and inter-disciplinary working in musculoskeletal imaging practice.

Career Outcomes After the Fellowship

  • Develop a specialised career in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and diagnostic imaging practice.

  • Practice in hospitals, sports medicine centres, orthopedic centres, pain centres, rheumatology centres, rehabilitation centres and diagnostic imaging centres.

  • To assist with sports injury management, planning for sports injury rehabilitation and return to play evaluation of athletes.

  • Work with orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists, physiotherapists, pain specialists and sports medicine doctors to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.

  • Look for opportunities in intervention clinics, academic teaching, ultrasound training facilities and research.

  • Improve skills with minimally invasive image guided procedures and regenerative medicine applications.

  • Gain insight into the latest advances in MSK ultrasound, AI-driven imaging and advanced interventional sonography.
